Walt Coburn

Author Code: AWCO

Born: Oct. 23, 1889 - White Sulphur Springs, Montana, USA

Died: May 24, 1971 - Prescott, Arizona, USA

Coburn gained his cowboy experience on his father's ranch, the Circle C, one of the largest in the Northwest. He moved to Arizona in 1916 and ranched with his brother in Globe. In 1922, he published his first story and his writing career began in earnest. He moved to Prescott, Arizona in 1927, then moved to Tucson, where he lived for the next 35 years. In 1961, he returned to Prescott and ten years later, committed suicide. Coburn epitomised the pulp author, producing over 1000 stories in the leading magazines such as True West, Frontier Times and the Old West. When the pulps dried up in the 1950s, Coburn turned to writing paperback originals. His works include Mavericks (1929), Barb Wire (1931), Son of a Gun Man (1933), Outlawed Orphan (1934), The Wagon Train Feud (1936), The Summer of the Black Snow (1939), Hired to Kill (1945), The Square Shooter (1956), Buffalo Run (1958), Sons of Gunfighters (1963) and La Jornado (1971).
