G. Lowes Dickinson

a.k.a. Goldsworthy Lowes Dickinson

Author Code: EGLD

Born: Aug. 6, 1862 - London, England

Died: Aug. 3, 1932 - London, England

Educated at the Charterhouse School in Godalming and at King's College, Cambridge where he earned a first-class degree in the Classics. He then spent some time travelling in the Netherlands and Germany before returning to Cambridge and being elected to the Cambridge Apostles, an intellectual society. In 1886, he began studying for a medical degree at Cambridge and passed his exam two years later. Nevertheless, he had decided that medicine was not his vocation. He was awarded a fellowship at Cambridge in 1887 which was renewed in 1896. That year he also published The Greek View of Life, which was moderately successful. Dickinson lectured in political science at Cambridge until his retirement in 1920, during which time he also lectured at the London School of Economics. During the First World War, Dickinson played a leading role in the forming of the Bryce Group, proponents of a league of nations. In the 1920s he continued to lecture and contribute articles against war. In 1929, he began giving talks on the BBC. He underwent an unsuccessful operation on his prostate and died soon after in 1932. His many works include Revolution and Reaction in Modern France (1892), The Meaning of Good: A Dialogue (1901), Religion: A Criticism and a Forecast (1905), From King to King (1907), Is Immortality Desirable? (1909), After the War (1915), Causes of International War (1920), War: Its Nature, Cause and Cure (1923), Plato and His Dialogues (1931) and The Contribution of Ancient Greece to Modern Life.
