Philippe De Massa

Educated at St. Cyr, he embarked on a military career after leaving school. He seved in the Imperial Guards and took part in the Italian and Franco-German wars. He was promoted to Chief of Squadron, Fifth Regiment, Chasseurs a Cheval in 1871. He resigned from active service in 1880. De Massa had begun composing and produced some operas at an early age. The operas were performed at the Conservatory of Music in 1865. On leaving the service he turned his talents to literature and produced a number of plays, before publishing his best-known, the novel Zibelene (1892). His other works include Le Service en Campagne (1882), La Cicatrice (1885), Au Mont Ida (1887), Fronsac a La Bastille (1887), La Bonne Aventure (1889), Souvenirs et Impressions (1897), La Revue retrospective (1899) and Sonnets (1899).
