Mary Hallock Foote

a.k.a. Mary Anna (nee) Hallock Foote

Born: Nov. 9, 1847 - Milton, New York, USA

Died: Jun. 25, 1938 - Hingham, Massachusetts, USA

Educated at the Female Collegiate Seminary in Poughkeepsie and at the Cooper Institute School of Design for Women, Foote became an accomplished artist and illustrator. She married Arthur de Wint Foote, a mining engineer, in 1876 and moved with him to San Jose, California. Foote became an excellent short story writer, as well as an illustrator of her works. She worked for major periodicals, such as The Century Magazine, Scribner's Monthly and Harper's Weekly as an illustrator and article contributor. She also produced a number of novels. Her many works include The Led-Horse Claim (1883), John Bodewin's Testimony (1886), The Last Assembly Ball (1889), The Chosen Valley (1892), Coeur d'Alene(1894), In Exile and Other Stories (1894), The Little Fig Tree Stories (1899), The Royal Americans (1910), Edith Bonham (1917) and The Ground Swell (1919).
