Robert J. C. Stead

Born: Sep. 4, 1880 - Middleville, Ontario, Canada

Died: Jun. 25, 1959 - Ottawa, Canada

Educated at Winnipeg Business College, Stead started a weekly newspaper, The Rock Lane Review in 1898 and edited it until 1908 when he took on the job of editor of the Crystal City Courier. His first book, The Empire Builder and Other Poems was published in 1908. In 1912, he moved to Calgary and worked on the Albertan. In 1913, he directed publicity for the colonization department of the Canadian Pacific Railway. He moved to Ottawa in 1919 and worked in the same capacity for the Department of Immigration and Colonization. During the 1920s and 1930s Stead concentrated on his writing and produced many novels, short stories and volumes of verse. From 1936 until his retirement in 1946 he was publicity director for the Department of Mines and Resources. In 1923, he was elected president of the Canadian Authors Association. His many works include Prairie Born (1911), Songs of the Prairie (1912), The Bail Jumper (1914), The Homesteaders (1916), Kitchener and Other Poems (1916), The Cow Puncher (1918), Why Don't They Cheer? (1918), Dennison Grant (1920), Neighbors (1922), The Smoking Flax (1925), Grain (1926) and The Copper Disc (1931).
