Percy F. Westerman

a.k.a. Percy Francis Westerman

Born: (?) 1876 - Portsmouth, England

Died: Feb. 22, 1959 - London, England

Educated at Portsmouth Grammar School, Westerman then took a job as a clerk at Portsmouth Dockyard. In 1900, he married Florence Wager. His first book for boys appeared in 1908, A Lad of Grit, and sold well. He became a very productive author over the following years. During the First World War, he worked for the Royal Navy on coastal duties, followed by a commission in the Royal Flying Corps in 1918. In the 1930s, Westerman was voted the most popular author of boy's stories. During the Second World War, he was the commander of the Arne platoon of the 7th Dorset Home Guard battalion. His son, John F,C, Westerman, born in 1901, was also an author. in 1911, he began living on a houseboat on the River Frome, which he was forced to relinguish after a fall when he was 70. Westerman's many works include The Young Cavaliers (1909), The Flying Submarine (1912), Building the Empire (1914), Under the White Ensign(1918), The Pirate Submarine (1923), King of Kilba (1926), The Secret of the Plateau (1931), The Bulldog Breed (1939), Fighting for Freedom (1941), Squadron Leader (1946), Dangerous Cargo (1952), The Lure of the Lagoon (1955) and Mistaken Identity (1959 Posthumous).
