Horacio Quiroga

a.k.a. Horacio Silvestre Quiroga Forteza

Born: Dec. 31, 1878 - Salto, Uruguay

Died: Feb. 19, 1937 - Buenos Aires, Argentina

Educated at the National College and the Polytechnic Institute of Montevideo, Quiroga was interested in many different subjects. He got a job in a machinery repair shop after graduating. He became interested in poetry and published some verse in local publications. He spent some months in Paris before returning to Uruguay and publishingLas arrecifes de coral (Coral reefs) in 1901. Together with some friends, he founded the Consistory of the Gay Science, a literary laboratory for their experimental writing. He accidentally killed one of his friends preparing for a duel and soon after,left for Buenos Aires. There he worked as a cotton planter. All of his short stories were published in Argentina. He had published The Crime of Another modelled on the style of Edgar Allan Poe, his idol. His works include The Feather Pillow (1907), History of a Troubled Love (1908), Stories of Love, Madness, and Death (1917), Jungle Tales (1918), The Wild (1920), Anaconda (1921), The Desert (1924), Exiles (1926), Past Love (1929), Beyond (1935) and The Chair of Pain (1937).
