L. T. Meade *

a.k.a. Elizabeth Thomasina (nee) Meade Smith

Author Code: ILTM

Born: Jun. 5, 1844 - Bandon, Ireland

Died: Oct. 26, 1914 - Oxford, England

She received her basic education in Ireland and began writing there when she was seventeen. She moved to London in 1874 and, later in 1879, married Alfred Toulmin Smith, a City solicitor. She became immensely prolific and popular in the genre of books for young readers, but was equally successful in mystery and suspense. During the next 30 years, Meade produced book after book; more than 300 before her death. During her career, she had a number of collaborations with male authors and produced almost 20 volumes in this manner. Probably the collaboration with Robert Eustace was the most successful. In her later years, she suffered with eye problems that kept her from writing in her final ten years. Nevertheless, she was able to dictate her work, which includes Dot and Her Treasures (1879), The Angel of Love (1885), This Troublesome World (Halifax) (1893), A Master of Mysteries (Eustace) (1898), Daddy's Girl (1900), The Face in the Dark (Eustace) (1903), Silenced (Halifax) (194) and Daddy's Boy (1909).
