Louise Imogen Guiney

Author Code: ALIG

Born: Jan. 7, 1861 - Roxbury, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Died: Nov. 2, 1920 - Gloucestershire, England

Educated at a convent school in Providence, Rhode Island, Guiney graduated in 1879. She began writing poetry and essays as a young woman. During her early years she worked at a variety of jobs, including at the Boston Public Library as a cataloguer. In 1884, she publishedSongs at the Start, a collection of poems which was well-received. The following year saw the publication of her first book of essays, Goose-Quill Papers. In 1901, she moved to Oxford, England. She became an admirer of Tennyson and Hazlitt. As a devoted Catholic, much of her work had religious overtones. She began to suffer ill-health during the 1910s and from then on concentrated on essays and biographical studies. She died of a stroke at the age of 59. Her biography was written by her close friend and collaborator, Alice Brown, in 1921. Her other works include The White Sail and Other Poems (1887), Brownies and Bogles (1888), A Roadside Harp (1893), A Little English Gallery (1895), Lover's Saint Ruth's and Three Other Tales (1895), Nine Sonnets Written at Oxford (1895), England and Yesterday (1898), The Martyr's Idyl and Shorter Poems (1899), Robert Emmet (1904), The Princess of the Tower (1906) and Letters (1926 Posthumous).
