Educated at Worcester College, Oxford, where he received an MA, Bourdillon then became a resident tutor to the two sons of Prince Christian at Cumberland Lodge in 1876. In 1878, he published his first book of poems, Among the Flowers and Other Poems. In 1879, he began tutoring for various universities while writing poetry and translating various works. Today, he is best remembered for his poem The Night Has a Thousand Eyes. In 1887, his translation of Aucassin and Nicolette was published to critical acclaim. Bourdillon wrote over 500 poems and one novel and his works include Young Maids and Old China (1888), Lost God (1891), Ailes d'Alouette (1891), Sursum Corda (1893), Nephele: A Novel (1896), Miniscula: Lyrics of Nature, Art and Love (1897), Night Has a Thousand Eyes and Other Poems (1899), Through the gateway (1902), Preludes and Romances (1908), Christmas Roses for 1914 (1914) and Gerard and Isabel (1921). |
