Author Code: EWEH
| |
Born: Aug. 23, 1849 - Gloucester, Eng;and Died: Jul. 11, 1903 - Cockayne Hatley, Bedfordshire, England
|
Henley suffered from tuberculosis of the bone from the age of 12 and, thus, his formal education was limited. The disease eventually resulted in the amputation of his left leg. Around 1868, Henley moved to London and embarked on a journalistic career. He continued to suffer from the disease and was in and out of hospital over the next ten years, during which he also suffered the removal of his right foot. In 1889, he was appointed editor of the Scots Observer, which became the National Observer in 1891. In 1890, he published Views and Reviews, which contained literary criticisms and analysis which are still topical today. Henley was a good friend of Robert Louis Stevenson with whom he collaborated on three plays. J.M. Barrie was also a close friend and used Henley's daughter Margaret as a model for Wendy in his Peter Pan. Henley's other works include Book of Verses (1888), Lyra Heroica (1891), Song of the Sword and Other Verses (1892), Robert Burns (1897), Poems (1898), For England's Sake (1900) and Hawthorn and Lavender with Other Verses (1901). |
