Bramah began as a short story contributor to English periodicals. He invented the blind detective Max Carrados, whose exploits were subsequently collected in Max Carrados (1914) and The Eyes of Max Carrados (1923). Bramah is said to have spent a number of years in China and his experiences with Chinese wit and humor led to a number of novels which were very popular and included The Wallet of Kai Lung (1900) and Kai Lung's Golden Hours (1922). Other works included The Mirror of Kong Ho (1905), The Transmutation of Ling (1911), The Specimen Case (1924), The Bravo of London (1934) and Kai Lung Beneath the Mulberry Tree (1940).
