Early 20th century author known for his florid and sometimes overly descriptive prose, Hergesheimer's first novel, The Lay Anthony was published in 1914. Achieving reasonable success with this book, Hergesheimer established himself as a popular writer. In 1917, he published The Three Black Pennys concerning a wealthy mining family, which became a best-seller. His other well-known works include Java Head (1919), and Balisand (1924), although he was a prolific writer who produced numerous short stories, biographies, history and criticism. Hergesheimer went into retirement in 1940 and did no further writing. |
