Storm practiced law in his home town of Husum until the Danish occupation in 1853 forced him to move to Potsdam. Up until that time, the majority of his literary output had been lyric poetry. He returned to Schleswig in 1864 and began to concentrate more on novellas. The year of his death, he published what is arguably his greatest novella, Der Schimmelreiter (The Rider on the White Horse). His novellas are among the finest in German literature and included Immensee (1850), In the Castle (1861) and Aquis Submersus (1875).
