Burckhardt studied theology as a youth, but his interest in history sent him to study at the University of Berlin. After graduating in 1843, Burckhardt began teaching and worked as a journalist in Bonn, Berlin, Basel and Zurich. His greatest work is The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy (1867) and established him as one of the first great historians of art and culture.
