Born into a musical family, Burgmuller was trained by his father who was an accomplished musician. His brother Norbert also became a composer. In 1832, Burgmuller moved to Paris where he composed light piano salon pieces and became very popular with the Parisians. He supplemented his income by teaching and composed several etudes (studies) for the piano which are still widely used as standard teaching works today.
