Educated at Amenia Seminary, Benton began his literary career with the Amenia Times as an editor. In 1856 until 1871, he spent time farming and producing some literary works. In 1872, he returned to campaign for Horace Greeley. He also wrote for newspapers in Chicago and St. Paul before retiring to Poughkeepsie. Most of his published books were of a biographical nature and included Emerson As A Poet (1883), Greeley on Lincoln (1893), In the Poe Circle (1879), Life of P. T. Barnum (1891), and Memories of the Twilight Club (1909).
