Becker was educated at the University of Wisconsin and Columbia University majoring in history.He began a teaching career in 1902 at the University of Kansas (1902-1916) that was to last until his retirement from Cornell University (1917-1941). His first book was The Beginnings of the American People (1915) and was followed by the excellent The Eve of the Revolution in 1918 and The Declaration of Independence in 1922.
