Leslie Charteris

Died: Apr. 15, 1993 - Windsor, England

Born of an English mother and Chinese father. Charteris was educated at Saint Andrew's School in Singapore, Rossall School in England and King's College, Cambridge. During his time at Cambridge, he published his first book and once it was accepted, he left school to embark on a literary career. Although moderately successful, he worked at a variety of jobs. His true success began with the introduction of Simon Templar, 'The Saint', in his third novel, Meet the Tiger, in 1928. In 1932, he moved to the U.S. and became a writer for Paramount Pictures, while continuing to produce short stories for various publications. He wrote for radio during the 1940s, including the Sherlock Holmes series. Between 1938 and 1943, RKO produced eight Saint films which added to Charteris' popularity. In 1962, The Saint starring Roger Moore made its TV debut and ran for seven years. Charteris was married four times. He also legally changed his name to Charteris. His many works include The Last Hero (1930), The Gold Standard (1932), Date in the Dark (1935), The Happy Highwayman (1939), The Darker Drink (1947), The Angel's Eye (1953), The Talented Husband (1962) and The Saint in the Sun (1963).
