The youngest son of General Robert E. Lee, Lee was educated at the University of Virginia joined the army in 1862 as a private in the Rockbridge Artillery, eventually rising to the rank of captain by the end of the war. After the war he used his inheritance from his grandfather to go into business in Virginia. In 1904, he published Recollections and Letters of General Robert E. Lee.
