The daughter of an Anglican minister, Mayor was educated in history at Newnham College, Cambridge. In 1902, she published Mrs. Hammond's Children, a collection of stories that received little attention. However, The Third Miss Symons (1913), introduced by John Masefield, won critical acclaim. Later, in 1924, she published her best-known novel, The Rector's Daughter. Mayor has won praise from authors such as M.R. James, Rebecca West and Virginia Woolf. Her other works include Miss Browne's Friend (1915), The Squire's Daughter (1924) and The Room Opposite (1935 Posthumous). |
