Educated at the University of Arizona and the Harvard Graduate School, Abernathy received an MBA and later PhD from the latter.He began writing science fiction stories when he was only ten and by the early 1940's had established himself as an up and coming star. He became a major contributor to SF pulp magazines such as Astounding Science Fiction, Planet Stories and Galaxy Science Fiction. As a linguistic scholar, Abernathy was a professor at the University of Colorado until his retirement. His many works include Heritage (1942), Peril of the Blue World (1942), Saboteur of Space (1944), The Dead-Star Rover (1949), Pyramid (1954), The Record of Currupira (1954), Junior (1956) and Single Combat (1968).
