Died: Feb. 28, 1815 - Columbia, South Carolina, USA
Horry inherited his father's plantation in 1770. At the outbreak of hostilities with England, Horry became one of twenty captains elected by the South Carolina congress and joined the 2nd Regiment. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel and then was assigned by General Gates to serve under Francis Marion as a colonel. In addition to his journal, he wrote a history of Marion's brigade which he entrusted to Mason L. Weems to be improved in style, but not changed in sense, for publication. Weems consequently ignored Horry's request and made major modifications and, in some cases, fabrications to the work. When it was published, Horry repudiated it. Horry continued to serve in the army until 1806 and rose to the rank of general.
