Greek author of the history of the ancient world and known as the "the father of history", Herodotus travelled extensively in Africa, Europe and Asia and is even thought to have led a rebellion in Halicarnassus. He is also known to have lived on the island of Samos and is purported to have died in Thurii, Southern Italy. His work, the History, is considered the first masterpiece of Greek prose.
