Educated in music in Stockholm and Berlin, Stenhammar became the artistic director and conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony in 1906. He was a superb pianist and toured Europe with the Aulin Quartet. Essentially a Romantic composer, Stenhammar's works were nevertheless quite varied and included two symphonies, six string quartets, a violin sonata, and other diverse works including piano pieces and operas.His work is still popular in Scandinavia today. He left his position as director in 1922 and died of a stroke five years later.
