Traditionally regarded as the author of the Tao Te Ching, very little is known of Lao Tse. He is said to have been a contemporary of Confucius and also to have been Keeper of the Archives for the Royal Court. The current consensus is that the Tao Te Ching is the work of more than one author and probably dates from the 4th century. Nevertheless, Lao Tse is regarded as the founder of the religious movement known as Taoism and considered to be as important as Confucius in Chinese historical culture.
