Marvin Lunenfeld is Professor Emeritus of History, State University of New York, Fredonia. He received his Ph.D. in History from New York University in 1968, lectured widely and has been awarded prestigious fellowships. He was awarded a Rockefeller Foundation Grant in 1994 (which he spent writing in Bellagio, Italy) for the preparation of this book. His publications include The Council of the Santa Hermandad. A Study of Ferdinand and Isabella’s Pacification Forces (Miami: University of Miami Press, 1970); Keepers of the City. The Corregidores of Isabella I of Castile (1474-1504), (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1987); 1492. Discovery, Invasion, Encounter, Sources and Interpretations. (Lexington, MA: D.C. Heath & Co., 1991).

Nicholas P. Cushner is Professor Emeritus of History, Empire State College, State University of New York. He received his Ph.D. in History from the University of London. He has written over 50 articles, encyclopedia articles, and reviews which have appeared in the American Historical Review, the Hispanic American Historical Review, and The Times Literary Supplement (London). He contributed extensively (13 articles) to the Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture, Scribner’s, 1996. He is the author of eight books, the most recent of which is Why Have You Come Here? The Jesuits and the First Evangelization of Native America (New York: Oxford University Press, 2006).
