Lewis Carroll *

a.k.a. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson

Author Code: ELCX

Born: Jan 27, 1832 - Daresbury, Cheshire, England

Died: Jan. 14, 1898 - Guildford, Surrey, England

Carroll was educated at Rugby School and Christ Church, Oxford where he took a degree in mathematics in 1854 and became a lecturer at the University from 1855 to 1881. In 1861 he was also ordained a deacon of the church. Carroll took a friend and three children boating, and when he returned home he wrote down the story that he had related to the children for Alice Liddell, one of the girls who had accompanied him. This was eventually published as Alice in Wonderland (1865) and was an immediate success, appealing both to children and adults alike. He published its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, in 1871. Carroll also produced a large quantity of verse, among which The Hunting of The Snark (1876) and Phantasmagoria (1869) are the most well-known. His other work included Sylvie and Bruno (1889), numerous short stories and essays plus some serious work in the area of logic and mathematics including Euclid and His Modern Rivals (1879).
