Richard McKenna

Born: May 9, 1913 - Mountain Home, Idaho, USA

Died: Nov. 1, 1964 - Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA

McKenna joined the US Navy when he was eighteen and served 22 years until his retirement in 1953. He took part in both World War II and the Korean conflict. Following retirement he used the GI Bill to study at the University of North Carolina, where he graduated with a BA in English. There, he also met his with Eva Grice, a college librarian.McKenna began his writing career in 1958 with the publication of Casey Agonistes in The Magazine of Fantasy an Science Fiction. In 1962, he published The Sand Pebbles, a hugely successful novel which later became a file starring Steve McQueen. Unfortunately, McKenna's career was short-lived; he suffered a heart attack and died at the age of 51. Many of his works were published posthumously, although he did publish many SF works in the pulp magazines. His works include Hunter Come Home (1963), The Secret Place (1966), Fiddler's Green (1967), The Sons of Martha and Other Stories (1967), Bramble Bush (1968) and The Left-Handed Monkey Wrench (1984).
