Harry Crosby *

a.k.a. Henry Sturgis Crosby

Author Code: AHCR

Born: Jun. 4, 1898 - Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Died: Dec. 10, 1929 - New York City, New York, USA

Crosby was descended from American aristocracy, if it can be called that, with J.P. Morgan an uncle, and his grandmother was the great-grand-daughter of Alexander Hamilton. |He was educated at St. Mark's School, a prep school of high regard, where he graduated in 1917. He volunteered to serve in the American Ambulance Service in France during World War I and met many of the authors he would later publish, including young Ernest Hemingway. Crosby spent two years in France and was cited for bravery, being awarded the Croix de Guerre. Nevertheless, the war had an enormous impact on Crosby. On his return to America in 1919, he began studying at Harvard University and received his degree in 1921. He began an affair with Mrs. Richard Peabody (Polly) which scandalized Boston. He worked for a bank, but disliked it intensely and quit after eight months. His uncle provided him with a job in Paris at Morgan, Harjes et Cie. In may 1922, he left for Paris and in September proposed to Polly. The two were married following her divorce ad lived in Paris with her children. In 1923, Harry quit Morgan to concentrate on writing and publishing. The couple developed the opium habit on a visit to North Africa and developed a wild life style. Polly in the meantime, had changed her name to Caresse to please Harry. Crosby was a womanizer of the highest quality and had numerous affairs. In 1927, they founded Editions Narcisse, an English language publishing company which was later renamed Black Sun Press. Besides Harry's own verse, they published many up and coming young artists including Hemingway, Hart Crane, James Joyce and D.H. Lawrence to name a few. The couple returned to America in November, 1929 for a visit.Crosby had met Josephine Rotch in Boston in July 1928 and had an ongoing affair. On his visit in 1929, he and Josephine went to Detroit for an extended stay, returning to New York on December 9th.The following day, Crosby didn't show up for a dinner party. Evidently, he had formed a death pact with Josephine and the two had committed suicide by gunshot. Although Crosby is regarded as a minor poet, his lifestyle was hardly minor. His works include Sonnets for Caresse (1925), Red Skeletons (1927), Chariot of the Sun (1927), Shadows of the Sun (1928), Mad Queen (1929), Sleeping Together (1929) and Collected Poems of Harry Crosby (1930 Posthumous).
