Irwin Shaw

a.k.a. Irwin Gilbert Shamforoff

Author Code: AIGS

Born: Feb. 27, 1913 - New York City, New York, USA

Died: May 16,1984 - Davos, Switzerland

Educated at Brooklyn College, Shaw received his BA in 1934. He began screenwriting in 1935 for radio and in 1936 produced his first play, Bury the Dead, which received critical acclaim. When the war broke out, he enlisted in the US Army and became a warrant officer. Following the War, he published The Young Lions (1948), perhaps his best work and later made into a film starring Marlon Brando. Accused by the McCarthy Committee of communist links, Shaw went to Europe after being blacklisted in 1951. He lived in Paris and Switzerland for over 25 years. There, he continued to produce best-sellers and developed his skills as a master of the short story. He actively contributed to leading magazines such as Collier's, Playboy and Esquire and he evolved into a very influential writer. His other successful works include Act of Faith, and Other Stories (1946), The Troubled Air (1951), Lucy Crown (1956), Two Weeks in Another Town (1960), Rich Man, Poor Man (1969), Retreat and Other Stories (1970), Beggarman, Thief (1977) The Top of the Hill (1979) and Acceptable Losses (1982).
