Jan Neruda

He was educated at the Academic Grammar School in Klementnim.Failing in his law studies, he turned to studying philosophy and philology at Charles University. After graduation, he taught school for a time beforebecoming a journalist for Narodm Listy (National Sheets). Later he worked for various journals and magazines. A fervent believer in Czech independence, Neruda was declared a traitor in 1871 and was forced to live abroad. He returned to live in Prague in 1883. He continued to write, but his health was always an issue. He finally died of intestinal cancer at 57. His works include Graveyard Flowers (1858), Arabesky (1864), Book of Verses (1867), Tales of the Lesser Quarter (1877), Cosmic Songs (1878) and Friday Songs (1896 Posthumous).
