Louis Couperus

Couperus spent his early years in both the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies, receiving his basic education in Batavia. He then attended the Hogere Burgerschool (HBS) in The Hague. It was at this time that his interest in literature blossomed. In 1885, he published A Ribbon of Poems. During 1888, his work Eline Vere was serialized in the Dutch newspaper Het Vaterland and received critical acclaim. In 1891, Couperus married his cousin Elizabeth Couperus-Baud. Couperus became a very talented and prolific writer and eventually became possibly the greatest author from the Netherlands. His wife became a very respected translator. The couple travelled widely and spent time in the Indies, Italy and France. He published a number of works which were influenced by events of the time such as the Boer War, the Greco-Turkish War andthe First World War. He also published many travelogues, short stories, novels, and even some plays. Hewas great friends with his translator Alexander Teixeira de Mattos. Towards the end of his life, he and his wife travelled the world, visiting Japan,China and the Indies. While in Japan, he contracted Typhoid feverand spent two months in a Kobe hospital. After his release, the couple continued travelling in Japan until October 1922 when they returned to the Netherlands. Suffering from problems with his kidneys and liver, he nevertheless continued writing. The couplemoved to De Steeg in early 1923 and Couperus was awarded the Tollens Prize and was appointed Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. He was taken to hospital in July suffering from an infection in his nose which had become septic. He fell into a coma and died a few days later. His works include Majesty: A Novel (1893), Williswinde (1895), Metamorphosis (1897), Inevitable (1900), Babel (1901), Dionyzos (1904), On the Road of Happiness (1908), The Unhappy One (1915), Lucrezia (1920) and The String of Compassion (1924).
