Viktor Rydberg

Author Code: NVRB

Born: Dec. 18, 1828 - Gonkoping, Sweden

Died: Sep. 21, 1895 - Djursholm, Sweden

From a poor background, Rydberg was educatyed in law at the University of Lund, but was unfortunately unable to continue after only one year due to lack of funds. He then worked for a while as a tutor until 1855 when he took a job as a journalist at Gotebergs Handels- och Sjofartstidning; a newspaper where he would work for the next 20 years. In 1857, he published his first novel, The Freebooter of the Baltic, an historical romance that was well-received. His second novel, Singoalla (1858), was a resounding success and firmly established Rydberg's literary credentials. Always active in politics, Rydberg served in the Swedish Parliamentfrom 1870 to 1872. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Uppsala in 1877 and became a member of the Swedish Academy later that year. He held positions as teacher and professor and in 1889 was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Rydberg was Sweden's most popular during most of his career and a national day of mourning was held on his death. His many works include The Last Athenian (1859), The Bible's Doctrine Concerning Christ (1862), The Magic of the Middle Ages (1865), Roman Legends Concerning the Apostles Peter and Paul (1874), Roman Days (1877), Investigations Into German Mythology - 2 Vols. (1886-89), The Armorer (1891) and The Future of the White Race (1895 Posthumous).
