Amelie Rives

a.k.a. Amelie Louise (nee) Rives Troubetzkoy

Born in Richmond in the later years of the Civil War, Amelie's godfather was Robert E. Lee. She married John Armstrong "Archie" Chanler, a member of the Astor family, in 1889 and there followed seven tumultuous years before they divorced. Archie would eventually be committed to an asylum. Amelie then married a Russian aristocrat, Prince Pierre Troubetzkoy and the couple resided near Cismont, Virgina. Rives' first book, A Brother to Dragons and Other Old-time Tales, was published in 1888 and was well-received. Her best work was undoubtedly The Quick or the Dead?, published in 1889 and which sold over 300,000 copies. She became a very successful and popular author through the 1920s before her output began to decline. Her works include Herod and Meriamne (1888), Witness of the Sun (1889), Athelwold (1893), Meriel (1898), Pan's Mountain(1910), World's End (1914), The Ghost Garden (1918) and Firedamp (1930).
