Catulles Mendes

Born: May 22, 1841 - Bordeaux, France

Died: Feb. 8, 1909 - Saint Germain, France

Mendes spent his early childhood in Toulouse and in 1859 oved to Paris where he studied poetry under Theophile Gautier. In 1861, he published a risque work that landed him in jail fora month. He published his first book of poetry,Philomena, in 1863. In 1866, he married Gautier's younger daughter Judith, but they were soon separated. From 1869 he lived with composer Augusta Holmes, and the couple had 5 children. In 1886, he left Holmes and married the poet Jeanne Nette. Mendes wrote a number of plays, librettos, novels, short stories and some non-fiction in addition to his many volumes of poetry. He was found dead in the Saint Germain railway tunnel and it was unclear whether it was an accident or suicide. His works include Les Freres d'armes (1873), Justice (1877), Soires Moroses (1885), Gwendolin (1886), Richard Wagner (1886), La Maison de la vielle (1894), Le Cygne (1899), La Carmelite (1902), Scarron (1905) and Glatigny (1906).
