Juan Perez De Montalban

a.k.a. De Montalvan

Author Code: SJPM

Born: (?) 1602 - Madrid, Spain

Died: Jun.25, 1638 - Madrid, Spain

The son of a Madrid bookseller, Montalban suffered from mental disorders from an early age, much as did his siblings and other family members. His father published Lope de Vega's works and young Montalban became his friend and admirer. He published his first book, Morir y disimular in 1619. He studied philosophy in Madrid and received a bachelor's degree. He then went on to study theology in Alcala de Henares and received a doctorate in 1625. Later that year, he was ordained a priest and entered the Congregation of San Pedro in Madrid, later becoming a notary to the Spanish Inquisition. In 1632, he published For All (Paratodos), his best known work. In all, he produced some fifty dramas, many poems and some short novellas. He realized many successes during his short career and he ended his life in insanity atthe age of thirty-six. His other works include Orpheus in Spanish (1624), La Vida y Purgatorio de San Patricio (1627), Como padre y como rey (1629) and Perinola (1632).
