Author Code: ANAG

Born: Mar. 28, 1909 - Detroit, Michigan, USA

Died: May 9, 1981 - Long Island, New York, USA

Educated at the University of Illinois, Algren received a BA in journalism in 1931 and wrote for the university's newspaper, the Daily Illini, during his student years. In 1933, he wrote his first story, So Help Me and two years later won the O. Henry Award for his short story The Brother's House. Later that year he published Somebody in Boots, his first novel, which unfortunately was not a success. He continued writing through the war years with limited success. In 1947, he met the French writer, Simone de Beauvoir, and the two began a seventeen year affair. Then, in 1949, he published the book for which he is best known, The Man With the Golden Arm, made into a film in 1955 starring Frank Sinatra. The book won the 1950 National Book Award for fiction. He followed with the equally successful A Walk on the Wild Side in 1956, which also became a film. He stopped writing novels around 1959 and concentrated on short stories and some journalism, but he returned in 1979 with The Devil's Stocking with was published posthumously in 1983. He was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 1981, shortly before his death. His other works include Never Come Morning (1942), The Neon Wilderness (1947), Chicago, City on the Make (1951), Who Lost an American (1963), Notes From a Sea Diary: Hemingway All the Way (1965) and The Lost Carousel (1973).
