Richard Watson Gilder

Born: Feb. 8, 1844 - Bordentown, New Jersey, USA

Died: Nov. 18, 1909 - New York City, New York, USA

Educated at his father's seminary in New York, Gilder also studied law in Philadelphia which was interrupted by the Civil War. He enlisted in the Landis Philadelphia Battery in 1863 and saw action at Gettysburg. Following the war he became a reporter and later moved up to editor for the Newark Advertiser. In 1870, he joined Hours at Home a Scribners magazine, which later merged with Scribners Monthly. Gilder became the managing editor until 1881 when it was renamed Century Magazine; he continued as its editor until his death. Gilder became very active in public and social affairs and held memberships in many organisations including the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the International Copyright League and the Simplified Spelling Board. He was a founder of the Kindergarten Association and of the New York Association for the Blind. In 1875, he published The New Day, a collection of love sonnets which became popular. He produced some sixteen volumes of poetry in addition to some biographies and many magazine and newspaper articles. His many works include The Poet and His Master (1878), Lyrics and Other Poems (1885), The Celestial Passion (1887), Two Worlds and Other Poems (1891), Five Books of Song (1894), In Palestine and Other Poems (1898), Poems and Inscriptions (1901), In the Heights (1905) and A Book of Music (1906).
