Isaac Babel

a.k.a. Isaac Emmanuilovich Babel

Author Code: RIEB

Born: Jul. 13, 1894 - Odessa, Ukraine

Died: Jan. 27, 1940 - Moscow, Russia

Educated at the Nicholas I Commercial School of Odessa and the Institute of Finance and Business Studies in Kiev, Babel began writing short stories when he was only 12. In 1916, he moved to St. Petersburg, where he met Maxim Gorky. He began contributing stories to Gorky's journal Letopis which were well-received by critics. In 1917, he worked for a short time as a translator for the Cheka and during 1918 contributed stories to Gorky's newspaper Novaya Zhizin. When the paper was shut down by the Bolsheviks, Babel worked for the food requisitioning service until the summer of 1919. He then returned to Odessa, married and became a war correspondent attached to Budyonny's Cavalry Army on the Polish front. During 1921, he was an editor for a small publishing house in Odessa. During 1923, he published The Tales of Odessa and his fame and popularity began to spread. In 1924, he moved to Moscow and in 1926, published The Red Cavalry. During these years a number of Babel's family emigrated, including his mother, sister and, finally, his wife. In 1927, his play Sunset made its premier in Odessa and Moscow, but was not very successful. He spent part of 1927 in Paris and on his return in 1928, the film comedy The Chinese Mill, for which Babel had written the script, made its debut. During 1929-30 he travelled throughout Russia and witnessed the famine and brutality of the Soviet regime. During 1932-33 he travelled to France, Italy and Germany. In 1934, he criticized the cult of Stalin at the First Congress of Soviet Writers. In 1935, his second play, Maria, made its debut and he began a collaboration with Sergei Eisenstein on the film Bezhin Meadow. In addition to a life-long friendship with Gorky, Babel also became close friends with Andre Malraux and Andre Gide. A voiciferous critic of the 1930's show trials and cultural repressiveness of the regime, Babel was arrested in May, 1939 and accused of spying for France and Austria. On January 27, 1940, he was executed at the Lubyanka Prison. The official Soviet death certificate, however, states that he died under unknown circumstances in March, 1941. Babel produced hundreds of short stories and his other works include The Story of My Dovecote (1925), The Lonely Years (1931) and The Jewess (Unfinished).
