Langston Hughes

a.k.a. James Mercer Langston Hughes

Author Code: AJLH

Born: Feb. 1, 1902 - Joplin, Missouri, USA

Died: May 22, 1967 - New York City, New York, USA

Hughes moved around as a child, living in Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas and New York, where, in 1921, he was attending Columbia University for a short time. In 1923 he began working as a seaman between the US and Africa and Europe. He had begun writing poetry at a young age, Publishing The Negro Speaks of Rivers in The Crisis in 1921. He returned from sea to New York and Harlem in late 1924 and the following April won first prize in an Opportunity magazine contest for his poem, The Weary Blues. The following year saw the publication of his first book of poems by the same name, which established him as one of the foremost members of the Harlem Renaissance. In 1930, he produced Not Without Laughter, his first novel and which won the Harmon Gold Medal for literature. Hughes was a prolific writer, who produced numerous plays, short stories, children's books and non-fiction works in addition to his poetry. The Ways of White Folks, his first collection of short stories appeared in 1934 and the following year he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. His successes continued during the 1940s, but in 1953 he was called before McCarthy's witch-hunt accused of being a communist. Since that was blatantly false nothing came of it, however Hughes had worked with the reformed communist Whittaker Chambers and named Arthur Koestler as a friend. During the 1950s and 1960s, his popularity fell somewhat, primarily among the black community. During his long career he was the recipient of a number of honorary degrees and in 1961 became a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters. His works include Fine Clothes to the Jew (1927), Dear Lovely Death (1931), Mulatto (1935), The Big Sea (1940), Freedom's Plow (1943), Simple Speaks His Mind (1950), I Wonder as I Wander (1956), Tambourines to Glory (1958) and Simple's Uncle Sam (1965).
