C. S. Lewis

a.k.a. Clive Staples Lewis, Clive Hamilton *

Author Code: ICSL

Born: Nov. 29, 1898 - Belfast, Ireland

Died: Nov. 22, 1963 - Oxford, England

Educated at Wynyard School in Watford, Hertfordshire, Campbell College in Belfast, Cherbourg House in Malvern, Malvern College and finally University College, Oxford. lewis had become interested in mythology in his youth and this found a place in his later writings. He volunteered in the British Army in World War I and was commissioned in the Third Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry in 1917. He was wounded in April 1918 and was discharged later that year. Back at Oxford, Lewis received Firsts in many subjects and subsequently became a Fellow of the College and a tutor in English Literature at Magdalen College in 1925, a post he would hold until 1954. Thereafter, he was appointed to the chair of Mediaeval and Renaissance Literature at Magdalene College, Cambridge. A prolific writer, Lewis produced both fiction and non-fiction during his long career. Today is perhaps best remembered for his fantasy work, The Chronicles of Narnia, but his writing included science fiction, poetry and some excellent novels. Lewis died on the same day as the Kennedy assassination, a dubious honour he shared with Aldous Huxley. His many works include Spirits in Bondage (1919), Dymer (1926), The Pilgrim's Regress (1933), The Space Trilogy: Out of the Silent Planet (1938), Perelandra (1943) and That Hideous Strength (1945), The Problem of Pain (1940), Miracles: A Preliminary Study (1947), The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950), Till We Have Faces (1956), Studies in Words (1960), An Experiment in Criticism (1961) and Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer (1963).
