A. E. Coppard

a.k.a. Alfred Edgar Coppard

Author Code: EAEC

Born: Jan. 4, 1878 - Folkstone, Kent, England

Died: Jan. 13, 1957 - London, England

After his father's death when Coppard was only nine, he was forced to seek work and was apprenticed to a Whitechapel tailor. His education was initially self-taught and included much reading. He took a job in Oxford and during his time there met and befriended some major literary figures including Yeats, Huxley and the poet Roy Campbell, all of whom encouraged Coppard to write. He began by publishing short stories in literary periodicals until 1919, when he left his job in Oxford and moved into a cottage in the woods where he could write in peace. The result was his first collection of stories, Adam and Eve and Pinch Me, in 1921. The stories were considered innovative and established a new model of this literary form. The following year saw the publication of his first volume of verse, Hips and Haws. His work was well-received by both critics and the public, but his reputation began to decline in the 1930's. His other works include Fishmonger's Fiddler: Tales (1926), Pelaga and Other Poems (1926), Silver Circus (1928), The Collected Poems of A. E. Coppard (1928), Nixey's Harlequin (1931), Dunky Fitlow (1933), Cherry Ripe: Poems (1935), Ninepenny Flute (1937), Ugly Anna (1944), Collected Tales (1948), Lucy in the Pink Coat (1954) and his autobiography It's Me, O Lord! (1957 Posthumous).
