Dorothy Sayers

a.k.a. Dorothy Leigh Sayers

Author Code: EDLS

Born: Jun. 13, 1893 - Oxford, England

Died: Dec. 17, 1957 - Witham, Essex, England

The daughter of the headmaster of the Christ Church Choir School in Oxford, Sayers was well-educated at home in addition to Somerville College, Oxford, where she graduated with first-class honours in 1915. She subsequently received her MA in 1920. Sayers had already published a book of poetry in 1916 (Op. 1). In 1922, she began working for the S. H. Benson ad agency in London as a copywriter. Sayers, who would become one of the 20th century's premier crime writers, published her first detective novel, Whose Body?, in 1923. Her primary character, Lord Peter Wimsey, appeared in ten novels and numerous short stories over the ensuing years. Her early mastery of Latin, and later Italian, also allowed her to produce some excellent translations, chief among them being Dante's Divine Comedy. Sayers married Arthur 'Mac' Fleming in 1926. She was highly religious and even became a church warden in 1952. She died suddenly of heart failure in 1957 at her Essex home. Her many works include Catholic Tales and Christian Songs (1918), Clouds of Witness (1926), Lord Peter Views the Body (1928), Strong Poison (1930), Five Red Herrings (1931), Hangman's Holiday (1933), Gaudy Night (1935), In the Teeth of the Evidence (1939), The Man Born to Be King (1941) and Unpopular Opinions (1947).
