Katherine Anne Porter

a.k.a. Katherine Anne Maria Veronica Callista Russell Porter

Author Code: AKAP

Born: May 15, 1890 - Indian Creek, Texas, USA

Died: Sep. 18, 1980 - Silver Springs, Maryland, USA

Raised primarily by her paternal grandmother, Porter ran away and got married when she was only sixteen; the marriage being short-lived with separation happening after three years and a final divorce in 1915. She spent some time as an actress and singer in Texas and Chicago before venturing into journalism with the Fort Worth Critic. She moved to Denver and worked for the Rocky Mountain News in 1918. She then moved to New York City and became a ghost writer. The following year she worked for a publisher in Mexico and became involved in Mexican causes; however, by 1922 she had become disillusioned with Mexican leaders. Her first published story, Maria Concepcion (1922), was well-received. She re-married in 1926, but again the marriage was short-lived, ending in divorce in 1927. Her third marriage came in 1930, lasting eight years this time. That year she also published the highly successful short story collection, Flowering Judas. Her final marriage, to Albert Erskine, in 1938 ended again in divorce in 1942. Porter took up teaching and spent of years in that capacity at Stanford, Michigan and Texas until retiring in 1958. In 1962, she published her masterpiece, Ship of Fools, which dealt with the German state of mind in the 1930's. The book became a best-seller and was made into an Oscar winning film. She was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1966 and also elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her other works include The Martyr (1923), He (1922), Magic (1928), Hacienda (1934), The Downward Path to Wisdom (1939), Pale Horse, Pale Rider (1939), The Journey (1944), The Old Order (1955), The Collected Stories of Katherine Anne Porter (1965) and The Never-Ending Wrong (1977).
