Herbert Read

Born: Dec. 4, 1893 - Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, England

Died: Jun. 12, 1968 - London, England

Educated at the University of Leeds, Read left school at the outbreak of the First World War and served in the Yorkshire Regiment. Rising to the rank of captain, Read was awarded both the Military Cross and the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions in France. In 1915, he published Songs of Chaos, his first volume of poetry. At the end of the war Read wrote Naked Warriors which called on his war experiences and was published in 1919. After the war he worked for a time at the Treasury before becoming an assistant keeper at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1922. In 1931, he joined Edinburgh University where he was appointed Watson Gordon Professor of Fine Arts. Read became an excellent art and literary critic and published many successful works in both areas. He also taught for a time in the 1950's at Harvard University. He is among the sixteen Great War Poets commemorated at Westminster Abbey's Poet's Corner. His many works include Eclogues (1919), In Retreat (1925), Ambush (1930), The Meaning of Art (1931), Art and Industry (1934), The Green Child (1935), The Paradox of Anarchism (1941), Education for Peace (1950), The Tenth Muse (1957), To Hell with Culture (1966) and Art and Alienation (1967).
