William Henry Davies

Author Code: EWHD

Born: Jul. 3, 1871 - Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales

Died: Sep. 26, 1940 - Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, England

Davies was a bit of a delinquent as a youth and, thus, his education ended when he was only 15. He then spent time as a picture-framer's apprentice and various labour jobs before traveling to America in 1893. He lived the life of a tramp in the U.S. traveling throughout the States and eventually went to the Klondike in Canada. At Ontario, he fell from a train and his right foot was crushed, resulting in the subsequent amputation of his leg just below the knee and forcing him to wear an artificial limb. On his return to England in 1899, he continued to live of a tramp until 1905, when he managed to publish his first book of poetry. Arthur Adcock of the Daily Mail received a copy of the work and introduced Davies to Edward Thomas, the poet and literary critic. Thomas helped Davies financially and even provided him with accommodation near his own home. Being able to work in peace, Davies finished The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp in 1907, which was well-received and provided him with an income. In 1911, he received a Civil List pension which further eased his financial situation. He returned to London in 1914 and became acquainted with many of the leading authors of the time, including Ezra Pound and Hillaire Belloc. He married Helen Payne in 1923 and they moved to Sussex. In 1925, he published Later Days, a sequel to his autobiography, which detailed his writing career. His last public appearance was in 1938 at Newport. His other works include Nature Poems (1908), Foliage: Various Poems (1913), Child Lovers (1916), The Song of Life (1920), Secrets (1924), Dancing Mad (1927), In Winter (1931), Love Poems (1935) and The Loneliest Mountain (1939).
