Francois Coppee

a.k.a. Francois Eduoard Joachim Coppee

Author Code: FFEC

Born: Jan. 16, 1842 - Paris, France

Died: May 23, 1908 - Paris, France

Educated at the Lycee Saint-Louis, Coppee began working for the ministry of war as a clerk while writing poetry in his spare time. In 1866, he published his first book of verse, Le Reliquaire, but it was his play, Le Passant, which made its debut in 1869 and starred Sarah Bernhardt that brought him national recognition. He produced a number of successful plays during the 1870's and in 1878 became the archivist for the Comedie Francaise. In 1884, he was elected to the French Academy and in 1888 he was awarded the Legion of Honour. In addition to his plays and verse, Coppee also wrote short stories, essays and an autobiography. Coppee was extremely right-wing in his politics and took the side against Dreyfus in the Dreyfus Affair. His other works include Intimities (1867), Olivier (1875), Madame de Maintenon (1881), Arriere-saison (1887), Le Pater (1889), Les Vrais Riches (1892), For the Crown (1896), La Bonne Souffrance (1898) and A Romance of Youth (1905).
