Author Code: AFNH

Born: Oct. 19, 1889 - Hamilton, Ohio, USA

Died: Feb. 23, 1968 - New York City, New York, USA

Educated at Washington University in St. Louis and Columbia University, Hurst always wanted to be a writer and published her first story, Ain't Life Wonderful, in a St. Louis newspaper when she was still in college. She moved to New York in 1910 and worked at a variety of jobs while continuing to churn out stories which eventually led to her recognition. During the 1920's she was one of the highest paid writers in America, producing a novel a year and contributing stories and articles to magazines such as Saturday Evening Post and Cosmopolitan. Her first novel, Stardust, appeared in 1921 and was very popular. Her works were also made into films including Back Street (1931) and Imitation of Life (1933). Hurst was socially and politically active and a close friend of Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1940, she was appointed to the National Advisory Committee of the WPA (Works Progress Administration). In 1952 she was a delegate to the World Health Organization. Of Jewish parentage, Hurst was also a firm supporter of Israel and helped to raise funds for victims of the Holocaust. Her other works include Gaslight Sonatas (1918), Humoresque (1919), The Vertical City (1921), Lummox (1922), A President is Born (1928), Anitra's Dance (1934), We Are Ten (1937), Hallelujah! (1944), The Hands of Veronica (1947), Anatomy of Me (1958), God Must Be Sad (1961) and Fool, Be Still (1964).
