Robert W. Buchanan

a.k.a. Robert Williams Buchanan

Author Code: ERWB

Born: Aug. 18, 1841 - Caverswall, Staffordshire, England

Died: Jun. 10, 1901 - Streatham, London, England

Educated at the University of Glasgow, Buchanan shortly afterwards began a career as a writer. In 1863, he published his first work, Undertones and followed with Idyls and Legends of Inverburn in 1865. His forte was the narrative poem although some of his best work was expressed in his novels and plays. In 1871, he published an article entitled The Fleshy School of Poetry in Contemporary Review which was highly critical of the Pre-Raphaelites such as Dante Rossetti and others. The article caused a furore at the time and Buchanan subsequently withdrew his criticism. In 1881, he dedicated his novel God and the Man to Rossetti. His other works include The Drama of Kings (1871), The Shadow of the Sword (1876), Balder the Beautiful (1877), The Martyrdom of Madeline (1882), Foxglove Manor (1885), Effie Hetherington (1896) and Father Anthony (1898).
